The history of the PTR dates back to 1976 when Dennis Van der Meer founded the organization. With members over 10,500 members in 122 countries, the PTR's mission is to provide education, international certification and service to tennis teaching professionals and coaches. 

The Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Symposium Coaches fellowship meeting was held Wednesday, February 21, 2001 from 8am to 9am at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA. Stan Smith, former world number one player in 1972 was the featured speaker.  30 coaches attended.
 

The first PTR fellowship was held in 2001 with 6 coaches attending.
