Clothing
The winter months in Sri Lanka are usually
very pleasant with occasional rain. (about 28C, 84F ), so bring lightweight,
quick-drying clothing (cotton is good), but NOT skimpy. Traditionally,
Sri Lankans are generally quite conservative and very modest. For
girls, if you bring tank tops, please make sure they have small arm holes
and wide straps. A sport warmup is essential for possible cooler
evenings. All items such as these you can also purchase in Sri Lanka.
On some days you will probably want to change more than once, so make sure
to bring plenty of t-shirts, socks, etc. In addition to your sports shoes
(Note: courts are outdoors and red clay), bring another pair of very comfortable
shoes for walking (we do LOTS of walking here!) and a pair of thongs or
similar item to wear when using the community showers. We would encourage
you to also bring a few "nicer" clothes for church and other public appearances.
Miscellaneous
-
You can buy almost anything you need here in Sri
Lanka, but you probably want to bring your own shampoo, soap, deodorant,
towel, etc.
-
The voltage in Sri Lanka is 220, so if you bring
any items that need to be plugged in, you will need to bring an adapter
with you.
-
Bring ideas for drills, games, practices, group
games and simple English songs to teach the students.
-
Don't forget your Bible, pen & notebook!
-
Other Items- umbrella or light raincoat (Please
pack in your carry-on. We never know when rain will fall ?) ; mosquito
repellent & anti-itch cream; athletic pre-wrap and tape (if needed);
any medication you use; battery-operated alarm clock; salvation bracelets
(multicolored beads on a leather string which can be used to share the
Gospel); extra t-shirts, jerseys, and anything else that might be appropriate
to give away as gifts to friends you will meet here; pictures of your family,
school, city, etc. are great for conversations with students; a daypack
(small backpack); sunscreen; wet wipes or anti-bacterial hand gel;
although it’s hot here, you might want to bring a light sweater or sweatshirt
for the cold restaurants.
Having said all the above: remember to travel
lightly - - you do not need as much as you think!
