Having traveled to developing countries and some of the poorest nations in the world, it breaks my heart when I see neglected children with nothing to play with. As I traveled to orphanages I would see children without any toys at all. So I thought why not box up our old used tennis balls and ship them as a gift to the orphanage. "A ball is a ball to a child"
In many orphanages, the staff is overworked, the facility
is overcrowded, and the orphanage is low on finances. The orphanages are
usually run by local people with local kids. Unless you speak and understand
the local language, are willing to eat a simple and meager diet and sleep
in crowded conditions, you might not be the best candidate to "help" at
these orphanages.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like to bring you up to date on this project:
In 2001, when I announced this project, I had 5 universities
contact me and say that they would participate. I had two clubs say
they with to participate. I had several individuals wish to participate.
Our ministry received $120 USD for shipping of balls (which allows us to
ship about 6 boxes of balls to six orphanages).
When I arrived back in the USA in July,2002 I was surprised to find eight large boxes of balls waiting for me in the church for one Pro Shop in Vero Beach, Florida.
Everything is either in place or developing to see this wonderful expression of our Christian love for others take place. I have:
A large list of Christian orphanages that will be posted
at our website that you can then ship directly to the orphanage. In the
meantime you may wish to use this list at http://www.mfinder.org/orphanages.htm.
This is the list tennisministry.com will be using. We will design
this page into our own website as soon as possible.
You must ship directly to each orphanage yourself.
Each time you ship to an orphanage please send us via email the name and
location. We will take the orphanage off the shipping list
and put them on a list for prayer. This will be posted at our website.
This will also mean that the orphanage will double shipments.
Sorry however tennisministry.com can not receive your
balls, due to limited storage. So you must ship the balls to each
orphanage that you chose yourself. Our ministry will ship our
own used balls, just as you do. Currently we have several thousand
use balls.
Each orphanage will receive a box of balls that will
hold approximately 50-75 balls. We would suggest limiting the number
of balls to this amount. If you know the orphanage is larger than
this number then you can ship additional balls. Please do not ship
more balls than this, as they will not need a large quantity.
Tennisministry.com has currently has approximately 3000
balls that we will ship out as we receive funds.
Donations can be made to Tennisministry.org to assist
us shipping our own supply of balls. We estimate it costs approximately
$20 USD to ship each box of balls via Post or 3rd class shipping.
We would suggest in each box you put a short note in
English, explaining what they are for, and a Christian message.
Remember this gift is unexpected. Soon we will post to our website
a sample message. You should also include your address, email address
and http://tennisministry.com website address and our email address
Tennisministry.org will ship our own 6 boxes of 70 balls
during the month of November, 2002. Details will be announced in
the monthly newsletter.
We suggest strongly that you support the "Tennis balls
for orphans Project" financially. Our focus is entirely directed
at balls as toys for underprivileged children. We will not support
the orphanage financially without a face to face contact and also ask that
the local church be involved. Without your support we can not ship
our own balls, as we believe that God will provide for each shipment.
We will only ship to Christian orphanages, as we feel
this offers the best oversight for gifts and that in this way the orphans
will have the best chance to have a relationship with Christ.
