Dennis Ralston is now the Director of Tennis at the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, but in the fall of 1972 he was the captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team. One of the players on that team was Stan Smith, the world's number one men’s player, who had made an impression on Dennis because of his integrity and relationship with Jesus Christ. The United States team was in the Davis Cup final against a strong team from Romania, playing in their country.
The Romanians were doing some things which were questionable to help give their players an advantage in the match. Stan Smith, who was known for his blistering serve, was in the final match to decide the Cup. The clay courts on which they were playing had been heavily watered down to make them slow and take away the effectiveness of Smith’s strong serve.
The match had reached the 5th set, with each player having won 2 apiece. The winner of this set would win the Davis Cup for his country. The Romanian line judges were intentionally making bad calls against the Americans to help the Romanians win. In the first game Smith, who always played the game with honesty and integrity, became frustrated when the line judge kept calling every one his serves to the "add court" out, even though they were clearly in.
Smith was down 40-0, just one point from losing the game. Captain Ralston gave instructions for him to serve right down the middle of the service area so the judge could not call the serve out. This would give a very big advantage to the Romanian but would maintain Smith’s integrity.
It was Unbelievable! It was Miraculous! Smith served 5 straight unreturnable serves and won the game. He went on to win the match and the United States won the Cup. This victory with integrity, along with other things which were happening in Dennis Ralston’s life, helped Dennis make the most important decision of his life-to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior.
